Stage 1 is Complete!
July 2, 2017
This week, you may notice a cool new light in the window of the DfX Lab. This is Stage 1 of the fully integrated bottle recycling project, developed by Dr. Michael Celestin! The project involves rinsing and chipping PET recyclable bottles into smaller components and using a low heat and mechanical process to melt and spin the plastic into filament. This creates filament ready to use in drinking-safe 3D printing projects! The wastewater is used in growing micro-greens (hence the grow light), which is cool, renewable, chemically responsible and delicious. There are still some features that will be included in the process, but feel free to ask Dr. Celestin questions about this exciting project, when you are in the DfX Lab!

The DfX Lab Welcomes Two New Members!
January 30th, 2017
We are so happy to announce two new additions to the DfX/TSS staff for the spring semester:
Bhavika "Bee" Shah (left) and Miriam Escobar (right).
Born in London, Bee is an extrovert, lived in South America, has endless stories, was a bartender, is an excellent chef, loves soccer and is fluent in all programming languages! She is a Computer Engineering Junior, and can often be found either troubleshooting someone else's C++, or wherever the laughter in the room is.
Miriam is a veteran - also with a great sense of humor - returning to school for her Graduate degree, after completing her service. She was a Chemical Engineering technician for nearly 10 years in the Air Force, and also has done a lot of traveling. She is the new member of TSS (Technical Support Services); part of the team that does poster printing and repairs throughout the college of engineering. But if you need anything in the lab, please don't hesitate to ask Miriam for help - she is warm, friendly and resourceful. We hope you will join us in welcoming them both!

Two Quick Project Demonstrations
October 9, 2015
USF Student Coyt Barringer is a DfX Lab regular and XLabs club member, who has many successful projects in his portfolio - including the large Tesla Coil, coordinated with a soundtrack, that he demonstrated Friday. When asked about his current projects, Coyt shared this smaller Tesla Coil, and Electric Longboard (see the videos below). His explanations are easy to understand and his casual demeanor belies a prowess evident in his work. If you see him in the lab, don't hesitate to ask him what he is working on - he is a nice guy, and he never disappoints!

DfX Lab's PLA Printer "Barbara Streisand" is Better Than Ever!
The performance of the 3D printers in the DfX Lab is dependent on a number of things, only some of which students can control. After at least 6 tries, and a ton of patient problem solving, USF Computer Engineering Senior Blake Burton got a "Gyro Inception Cube" to print on "Barbara Streisand" (the Flash Forge PLA printer) this week, without any supports! By varying every parameter, he finally got this successful print, and you can, too! Stop by and give "Barbara" another chance to be your favorite printer .
M.E.C.H Sub Group Demonstrations September 9,2015M.E.C.H. allows students of all ability levels to get involved in currently funded group projects, or to begin their own personal projects with the benefit of peer mentorship and the potential of future funding. On Friday, the project leaders and sub groups made small demonstrations.
Don't try this at home or without supervisor approval! If you are curious about M.E.C.H., come to the Design for X lab on Fridays, from 3-6 pm! Below, the Electronics subgroup of M.E.C.H. demonstrates what happens when you overload a capacitor, (and why one wears goggles at the electronics bench) as part of a general safety training. |
